Description
USAAC 33rd Pursuit Squadron (Provisional) pilot 2Lt Robert Oestreicher prepares to break away as he sights Mitsubishi Zeros diving on his five plane flight. The nine Japanese fighters were the vanguard of an attack by 242 carrier and land based bombers and fighters on the port of Darwin, Australia, 19th February 1942. In the one sided fight which developed, 9 of the 10 American Curtiss P-40 fighters stationed at Darwin were either shot down, destroyed on the ground, or destroyed in the process of taking off. Only Lt Oestreicher's P-40 "Miss Nadine" would survive the fight. Oestreicher received a Distinguished Service Cross for the action and was officially credited with destroying a "Val" dive bomber, although his claim has been disputed by some historians.
