One of the more significant P-40 Kittyhawks in RAAF service during the pacific war. 78 Squadrons “Black Magic” was originally flown and named by F/Lt Denis Baker DFC.
In his hands it scored the last victory of the New Guinea campaign, downing a “Tony“ over Japen Island on 10th June 1944.
This was after he downed a Zero south of Biak in 78 Squadrons biggest action on 3rd June 1944 as depicted in the artwork.
Following the end of Baker’s tour “Black Magic” was handed down to WO Len Waters. The first indigenous pilot to fly for the RAAF.
Founded in 2014, Hangar 7 Art produces historically accurate military aviation prints, apparel, fabrics, commissioned works and other merchandise by Australian born artist Mark Donoghue. “After being a long time collector and researcher of WWII aviation. And starting with nothing more than a passion for my subject, imagination, and few basic computer skills. I began producing aviation artworks. What has evolved is a fusion of photography and various digital art techniques, to bring to life my minds eye view of 20th century military aviation and aerial combat. I find there is a beauty and majesty on the canvas in which these pioneer aviators endured, and inflicted so much horror.” - Mark Donoghue
