Artist's Description

Supermarine Spitfire MkXIV, F/O Ken “Junior” Collier (RAAF), 91 Squadron RAF, West Malling, June 1944.
On the 24th June 1944 Ken Collier became the first pilot to physically tip a V-1 flying bomb. After running out of ammunition he came along side the bomb and after a couple of attempts knocked it nearly 90 degrees from the horizontal, upsetting its gyro mechanism, and sent it spiraling to the ground. While a rare method of disabling the V-1, it was effective, and is a shining example of the determination and courage of the young pilots who attempted to save civilian lives in London and elsewhere during WWII. Ken would become a V-1 ace with 7 kills, however he was killed in action in an aerial engagement over the Ruhr later in the year.

About Mark Donoghue

Mark Donoghue

Founded in 2014, Hangar 7 Art produces historically accurate military aviation prints, apparel, fabrics, commissioned works and other merchandise by Australian born artist Mark Donoghue. “After being a long time collector and researcher of WWII aviation. And starting with nothing more than a passion for my subject, imagination, and few basic computer skills. I began producing aviation artworks. What has evolved is a fusion of photography and various digital art techniques, to bring to life my minds eye view of 20th century military aviation and aerial combat. I find there is a beauty and majesty on the canvas in which these pioneer aviators endured, and inflicted so much horror.” - Mark Donoghue
