Artist's Description
A Spitfire MkXIV follows a Messerschmitt Bf109 into a Split S combat maneuver over France.
The Split S required the pilot to half-roll their aircraft and while inverted execute a descending half-loop, resulting in level flight in the exact opposite direction at a lower altitude.
The maneuver could be an effective tactic to escape a pursuing aircraft as it provided a rapid increase in speed and change of direction, but at the expense of altitude.
About Mark Donoghue
Founded in 2014, Hangar 7 Art produces historically accurate military aviation prints, apparel, fabrics, commissioned works and other merchandise by Australian born artist Mark Donoghue. “After being a long time collector and researcher of WWII aviation. And starting with nothing more than a passion for my subject, imagination, and few basic computer skills. I began producing aviation artworks. What has evolved is a fusion of photography and various digital art techniques, to bring to life my minds eye view of 20th century military aviation and aerial combat. I find there is a beauty and majesty on the canvas in which these pioneer aviators endured, and inflicted so much horror.” - Mark Donoghue
