During the night of 16-17 May 1943, having already breached the German Mohne Dam, the remaining three aircraft of 617 Squadron still with their revolutionary bouncing bombs (code name Upkeep) headed for the undefended but extremely tight confines of the Eder Dam. After two failed attempts it was all up to the crew of Australian pilot Les Knight who delivered the squadrons final Upkeep with precision. Wing Commander Guy Gibson looks on as Knight's Lancaster clears the dam, the Upkeep in its final skip before striking the wall. Sinking to a a predetermined depth the bomb exploded, breaching the mighty dam, and unleashing a devastating torrent of water that smashed through the valley and towns below.
Founded in 2014, Hangar 7 Art produces historically accurate military aviation prints, apparel, fabrics, commissioned works and other merchandise by Australian born artist Mark Donoghue. “After being a long time collector and researcher of WWII aviation. And starting with nothing more than a passion for my subject, imagination, and few basic computer skills. I began producing aviation artworks. What has evolved is a fusion of photography and various digital art techniques, to bring to life my minds eye view of 20th century military aviation and aerial combat. I find there is a beauty and majesty on the canvas in which these pioneer aviators endured, and inflicted so much horror.” - Mark Donoghue
