335th Fighter Squadron CO Major George “Carp” Carpenter is pounced by a Bf109 near Stendel, Germany, 18th April, 1944.
Carpenter had just downed a Bf109 before his P-51B Mustang received fatal damage in this engagement. With his aircraft smoking heavily he downed an FW190 in a head on engagement before he was forced to bailout as fire took hold of his Mustang.
A former RAF Eagle Squadron pilot, Carpenter and the rest of the Eagle Squadron pilots were absorbed into the USAAFs 4th Fighter Group.
His tally rose quickly when the group transferred from the P-47 Thunderbolt to the new P-51B Mustang. He amassed all but one of his 13.33 victories between mid March 1944 and his last mission in mid April flying the Mustang.
He was to wait out the rest of the war as a POW.
Founded in 2014, Hangar 7 Art produces historically accurate military aviation prints, apparel, fabrics, commissioned works and other merchandise by Australian born artist Mark Donoghue. “After being a long time collector and researcher of WWII aviation. And starting with nothing more than a passion for my subject, imagination, and few basic computer skills. I began producing aviation artworks. What has evolved is a fusion of photography and various digital art techniques, to bring to life my minds eye view of 20th century military aviation and aerial combat. I find there is a beauty and majesty on the canvas in which these pioneer aviators endured, and inflicted so much horror.” - Mark Donoghue
